(my) long story short

Scientific studies and canine behaviour

The French education system was based on 3 paths when I was in high school: literary, economic and scientific. I chose the latter as part of my plan to study at a vet school to eventually work in animal behaviour. After 2 years of an intensive course in scientific subjects (BCPST), I decided to specialise directly in animal behaviour and did a dog behaviour and training course, from which I graduated in 2018 as a canine behaviourist and trainer.

Languages studies

I have loved translation since the moment I was given the opportunity to practise it. Making it an activity for a living quickly became a dream that I set to making true, in addition to working in ethology / dog training. I graduated in 2020 with an English language, literature and culture licence from the University of Nantes (France), with a year spent in Limerick (Ireland) as part of the Erasmus programme. I then studied translation at University College Cork (Ireland), a master’s programme which is part of the European Master’s in Translation network, and graduated in 2021. Musical development

And finally, my niche specialisation: music. That is a very broad topic - and industry! I learned the piano as a child and started composing as a teenager. I’m interested in the creative side as well as in the technical side of music production, when put in relation with translation we get a unique services offer adapted to bands and companies working in music production or concert venues. I love the human aspect of this project as it is, on one hand, a way to help bands develop their activity across the world and to assist and guide them in a country and culture they don’t know. On the other hand, it is a way to promote foreign artistic projects in the French-speaking world, in particular in France.

Projects in progress

Autobiography (TBA): a project that gathers autobiography and music, a dream for a translator specialised in both! Working on it has been enthralling as I plunged into a composer’s experience of life and his very own perspective and style (which applies here both to literature and to personality). The technical elements have been a challenge I took up with great pleasure. I enjoyed reading his book and I hope his future French speaking readers will enjoy it just as much.

Training planned

The idea is to train myself on what my clients are trained on. Knowing your job perfectly will make mine perfect for your needs. I’ll be your colleague as much as your go-to translator.

I’m already a professional dog behaviourist but there’s always more to learn on this subject and on many other species which are still being studied by scientists of all fields (ethology, populations studies…) and I intend to broaden my knowledge to more species and contexts.

Music production is a highly technical field and training myself in it will take a life time as it keeps evolving with technological progress. Being aware of that makes me open to new ideas and knowledge and not sticking to old techniques and methods or taking them for granted. The next planned training courses are song translation and surtitling for the opera.

I also plan to train myself on web design, user-interface, SEO and other web-orientated content.

Maintaining and improving translation skills

Last but not least: languages and cultures. How could I discuss quality and improvement as a linguist without talking about the fundamentals of this job? Being a translator doesn’t mean that you know a language (even your native language) perfectly and even less forever. Languages evolve, cultures too: what you know today will be outdated tomorrow. Living in France allows me to remain immersed in the culture and its changes, as well as witnessing the constant updates of the language and its uses, often coming from the youth. I also keep informed about my other languages’ linguistic and cultural news as much as I can and I read content of all types and times. I’m currently improving my Italian and I’m learning German.
