I've been a bookworm since I was first able to hold a book, so associating my love of languages and my old passion for literature came somewhat naturellement. I’m particularly fond of poetic and creative styles, whose translation represents a particularly challenging process into which I plunge myself day and night. As a French native translator, I not only master my native language perfectly, but I also have extensive knowledge of French historical, cultural and social context, expanded by my university studies in humanities. That makes the difference when it comes to successfully exporting ideas and concepts. I’m here to convey your message with the perfect formulation. In marketing and more specifically advertisement, translation becomes transcreation: your ideas are adapted to your new audience with their own pertinent catch phrases and puns. Some translation fails/mistranslations due to a lack of understanding of the target audience or to using automatic translations can be disastrous!

Translation is written while interpreting is oral. Translation can be for physical documents, web pages, videos (subtitles), opera (surtitles) and many more. Interpreting can be simultaneous (while the client speaks) or consecutive (after the client speaks), for conferences, medical services, court examinations, police interviews and many more. The hybrid concept is sight translation: the translation is uttered while reading a written document. Find out more here.
Localisation is the adaptation of a document or product to a new audience, it goes beyond translation as there is copy-writing included in this practice, that’s where the frontier with creative translation / transcreation can be blurred. It aims at making the content available and understandable by a specific audience with different needs and cultural references. It is particularly useful for marketing strategies to export a brand and its products / services (advertisement campaign for example). Find out more here.
Nothing for the author! The costs are on the publisher’s end. In France, the royalties paid to the translator follow the same system as the ones paid to the author, as the translation is recognised as the translator’s original work.
It depends on the word count of course, and on the type / subject. A translator usually works on around 2,000 words per day if the content is general. A novel of around 120 pages (100,000 words) for example would take around 2-3 months, including the various revision steps and the discussion sessions with the author (knowing the subtle tone/style preferences and intentions behind your words brings the translation to the next level!). The more specific it is, the more time it takes to make researches and translate the content accurately and precisely, even for a specialised translator (maybe even more in that case as we know it’s not simple as it looks and we don’t settle for a literal translation that wouldn’t work in the book’s specific context).

AI is the new and improved version of neural machine translation. This technology is particularly efficient for the English>French combination as it is very used and there are plenty of resources to keep improving the results. It has many limits though, and isn’t adapted for literary translation, creative content or highly specialised or technical content. Also, it is advised to apply at least an editing step after the use of AI for your translations as unnatural or incoherent formulations, or worse, mistranslations, could give incorrect information to your audience and damage your brand’s image.
A good translator isn’t only someone who speaks another language. Make sure you hire a professional linguist who’s certified and who’s specialised or has experience in your content to provide a work of quality that will be read by your audience just like the work done by a fellow professional from the target country. Our native language is the one we’ll always know best. As fluent and competent in a language as we can be, we might still miss the perfect formulation that a native speaker would naturally have thought of. Un unnatural writing that gives the tiniest hints that it wasn’t written by a native speaker is the last thing we want: words need to flow and to be as natural and adapted to their use and audience as possible.
